What Gearing Do You Need for Hilly Folding-Bike Tours?

How to check whether a folding bike's easiest gear suits steep, sustained climbs with luggage, and how to compare bottom gears on hub and chain systems.

For a hilly folding-bike tour, you need a lowest gear that still feels easy on the steepest sustained climb of your route, with the luggage you will actually carry. No single number of speeds or gear ratio gives that answer for every rider. Folding bike gearing is best judged by its bottom gear, not by how many gears it has.

A rider pedals a folding bicycle with touring luggage up a sustained hill.

In practice, that means two steps. First, find the hardest climb and your real touring load. Then find each candidate bike's actual lowest gear and compare them on one shared measure.

Match the lowest gear to your steepest climb at touring load

Base the choice on one specific test: the steepest sustained climb on your planned route, ridden with your full touring setup. The bottom gear has to suit that climb. A gentler average day on the same tour does not set the requirement.

Cycling UK treats low gearing as a personal matter. What counts as low depends on the rider's circumstances. Its suggested indicator is that the easiest gear should feel very easy at the start of a ride, even on the steepest gradient you are likely to meet. Read this as a guide to what you should feel, not as a ratio to buy or a promise that a given climb will feel comfortable.

Start with the route. Short, rolling hills and long, steep climbs can call for different low-gear capability. A rise you can crest with a few hard pedal strokes is not the same task as a climb that lasts many minutes. Use the elevation profile in your route planner, or a contour map, to find the longest steep section. Note roughly how long it is. That climb is your reference point.

Next, add the load. The same Cycling UK guidance says laden tourists in particular need to be able to use lower gearing for loaded touring. A bike that feels fine on an unloaded test lap can feel different on that climb with panniers, food and water on board. So apply the check with the rider and luggage setup you will actually tour with, not a lighter version. Keep the total weight within the bike's permitted load as well. Our guide to folding-bike load limits explains how rider weight, luggage and rack load add up.

Where you can, try it out. Load the bike as you would for the tour, find a climb similar to your reference climb, and shift into the lowest gear before the slope bites. If the lowest gear feels very easy near the start and lets you maintain a sustainable cadence through a representative sustained climb, treat that as a positive indicator, not a guarantee for the tour. If you are already working hard in the lowest gear near the bottom, take that as a sign the bottom gear is too high for this tour. Then compare candidates with a lower one.

If a loaded test ride is not practical, use a bike you know as your reference. Work out its lowest gear with the method in the next section. Use the struggling bike as a warning benchmark. A candidate should have a meaningfully lower bottom gear, but its suitability still needs to be checked against a representative loaded climb.

Compare the lowest usable gear, not the number of speeds

A speed count tells you how many nominal gear positions or combinations the drivetrain offers. It does not necessarily show how many distinct ratios you get or how low the easiest gear is. Two bikes with the same number of speeds can have different bottom gears, so compare the bottom gear itself.

On a chain-driven bike with a derailleur, Cycling UK defines the lowest gear as the combination of the smallest chainring and largest sprocket. The chainring is the toothed ring at the pedals. The sprocket is the toothed ring on the rear wheel. Look up both tooth counts in the specification sheet. If the bike has only one chainring, that ring is the smallest one. A smaller chainring or a larger sprocket gives an easier bottom gear.

An internal gear hub works differently, because its gears sit inside the rear hub. Here the visible chainring and sprocket give only the starting point. Cycling UK's method is to derive the hub's direct-drive gear from wheel size and tooth counts. You then multiply that figure by the hub's listed internal ratios to get every gear, including the lowest. This needs the exact hub model, because the ratio table is listed per hub. If you are still deciding between the two systems, our comparison of hub versus chain gearing covers gear range, weight, care and service access.

Wheel size also changes the result. Folding bikes come in several wheel sizes, and the same tooth counts produce a different gear on a different wheel. To put candidates on equal terms, compare lowest gears using one measure, such as metres of development, in a gear calculator. Metres of development is the distance the bike moves for one full turn of the pedals. A lower figure means an easier gear. The calculator gives a fair result only when you enter each bike's actual wheel size, tooth counts and, for a hub, the correct hub model.

A diagram shows how to find the lowest gear for derailleur and hub-geared bikes, then compare both in metres of development.

Some specifications list only "7 speeds" or a hub name. In that case, ask the manufacturer or seller for three details: chainring and sprocket tooth counts, wheel and tyre size, and the exact hub model where one is fitted. When you compare models in our folding bike range, collect the same details for each one so the comparison stays consistent.

This comparison shows which bike has the easier bottom gear. Your loaded climb, as described above, still decides whether that gear is easy enough. If your riding is mostly in town with only moderate slopes, our guide to gearing for city riding looks at gear steps for stop-and-go traffic.

FAQs

Does a folding bike with more gears climb hills more easily?

Not necessarily. More gears generally means more selectable gear positions, but it does not necessarily mean more distinct ratios, closer spacing, a wider overall range, or an easier lowest gear. For climbing, the useful figure is the bottom gear.

14:05 On a chain-driven bike, you get it from the smallest chainring and largest sprocket. On a hub, you get it from the hub's lowest internal ratio.

How much lower should my gearing be when I carry touring luggage?

There is no fixed amount to add for a given weight of luggage. Cycling UK treats low gearing as rider-dependent and points out that laden tourists in particular need low gears. The practical step is to judge your folding bike gearing with the luggage fitted. If you have only tried the bike unloaded, repeat the climb check with the full touring load before you commit.

What should I ask a seller if the lowest gear is not listed?

Ask for the front chainring tooth count, the largest rear sprocket tooth count, the wheel and tyre size and, for a hub-geared bike, the exact hub model. With these details you can calculate the lowest gear in a gear calculator. You can then compare it with other bikes in metres of development instead of relying on the advertised number of speeds.
